Questions and Answers

1. Is your firewood seasoned?  No.  It is green, meaning it is unseasoned.

2. Can I burn green firewood?   Maybe.  If you have an older, non-catalytic type stove that has enough draw to generate a hot, clean burning fire, it is possible to burn green wood.  However, most wood burning appliances probably won't fall into this category.  Furthermore, green wood burned ineffeciently will generate excessive smoke and creosote and is the cause of many chimney fires.  Considering the extra BTUs that are required just to dry out the wood, it is very preferable to burn seasoned wood.  You are also at risk to receive a notice from government officials for polluting the air with high PM-2.5 Particulate levels in some areas of the Borough if you burn green firewood.

I do not recommend burning the green wood prior to adequate seasoning because of chimney fire risks and other hazards.

3. How long will  your wood take to season?  In ideal summer weather conditions, if your firewood is cut, split, and stored properly, it can season in as little as six weeks.  Conversely, under poor drying conditions, drying times may be over six months.

4. What kind of chainsaw do you use?  I use a Jonsared 2159 for felling and limbing and a Husqvarna 385 for bucking.  Both are equipped with 24" bars and full comp square chisel chains.  Both were bought and are serviced by The Woodway in Fairbanks.

5. Where do you get your wood?  I get the wood that I sell from State of Alaska timber sales.  Information on these sales can be found by clicking here

If you are interested in cutting your own firewood in the Fairbanks North Star borough, personal use firewood permits are available locally at a very reasonable price through FNSB Land Management - click here to visit their site for more information on this.  The state of Alaska also offers personal use firewood harvesting permits.

6. Do you cut and sell year-round?  Yes (-30 and warmer).

7. Why purchase green firewood?  Economics.  There are many people who, for a variety of reasons and choices, prefer not to cut their own firewood, but like to season it themselves instead of paying more for seasoned firewood.  It is cheaper, in many cases, to buy my green firewood and season it oneself than it is to buy seasoned firewood or fuel oil.

Another reason customers purchase green firewood is peace of mind.  It has happened in the Interior that seasoned wood sellers run out of seasoned wood to sell or are backed-up on orders for over a month during the winter.  Winter in Interior Alaska is not the time to have to depend upon someone who may or may not have seasoned firewood readily available for sale to keep oneself or one's family warm.  On the other hand, buying enough firewood earlier in the year, or even for the next year or further out, seasoning it in one's own yard, and having it on hand is an extremely wise, assuring thing to do; it can even be seen as an investment on personal and or family well-being because Interior Alaska is not the place to be unprepared for winter.

8. Do you take payments on firewood purchases?  No.  I do accept cash, major credit cards, and personal checks.

9.  If a person is new to getting (whether cutting it themselves or puchasing it), drying, storing, burning, etc. firewood, do you have a recommendation on where he or she can learn how to do these things the best ways possible?   Yes.  There is a great little brochure written exclusively for Fairbanks North Star Borough residents that covers everything mentioned that can be downloaded for free in the PDF format by clicking here.  Another free download specifically for people purchasing firewood can be found by clicking here.  For more informative links, click here.
